Kanchenjunga Region : Kanchenjunga Region is a less traveled area of eastern Nepal that includes both northern and southern base camps of Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. Apart from the locals, only few trekkers tread in these wild eastern alpine valleys of Kanchenjunga.
Views of stretched Kanchenjunga Range and Jannu (7710 meters), dominating the sky are common in Kanchenjunga Region. Walks through pristine Rhododendron forest with these views are a real pleasure. These contrasts between jungles and glaciers with some of the world's highest peak makes Kanchenjunga Region a truly fascinating place in Nepal. Kanchenjunga Region is also home to some of the richest rhododendron forests in Nepal and also the elusive snow leopards.
The higher valleys are separated into two different valleys, south and north, with Oktang being the final point of southern side and Pangpema of the other. These two valleys are separated by Sele La Pass ( meters). Oktang (4730 meters) is a spectacular viewpoint, that provides views of Kokthang (6148 meters), Rathong (6678 meters), Kabru Range, Kanchenjunga Range and Jannu (7710 meters) in the southern side. It is also as closest as one can trek on the way to the southern base camp of Kanchenjunga. On the northern part, there are more settlements in the higher valleys, compared to that of southern side of Kanchenjunga. Ghunsa (3475 meters), a lovely Tibetans Buddhist village in southern part, is one of the biggest villages in whole higher valleys of Kanchenjunga Region. At the end of this valley, Pangpema (5150 meters) offers a full circular views of Kanchenjunga (8586 meters), Kangbachen (7903 meters), Ramtang Peak (6601 meters), Taple Sikhar (6341 meters), Nepal Chuli (6910 meters) and Kirat Chuli (7365 meters).
Kanchenjunga Region also provides an excellent opportunity to observe real Nepali lifestyle. There are several typical hilly villages en route to higher valleys of Kanchenjunga region. These villages and their lifestyles represents most of other hilly regions of Nepal. The tradition and culture may differ but way of living will be almost similar through out the hilly regions of the country. Once some one is in Kanchenjunga region, one is bound to have an unforgettable experience.
